Developer Information:
The CAM Zeitgeist application is a tool for the statistical analysis of Contextualized Attention Metadata (CAM) [1] [2] [3] which is aggregating the monitoring data of several learners in different ways. The tool can be used to reflect the activities of a specific learning course or to reveal general learning trends, e.g. by showing an overview of which learning resources and topics have been relevant to learners and when. The CAM Zeitgeist tool comprises three different visualization components, namely Usage Summary, Content History and Usage History. To control the data visualized in the Zeitgeist tool the user can define a time range by selecting a start and an end date in the Date Chooser component. Further the user can show/hide different action types in the Event Selector component e.g. to concentrate on specific actions. These selections are applied to each visualization component after pressing the Evaluate button.
Usage Summary:
The Usage Summary component summarizes the monitored activities based on their action type. Action types are, for example, opening a document, sending an email or searching for a document using a search form. Further, the user can view the top 10 items for a specific action type by clicking on the respective details link.
Content History:
The Content History provides a time-based sorted and detailed view on the monitored user actions. Thus the CAM Zeitgeist tool user can explore in detail what learners have done. In the Example, one learner was searching for “kollaborator” at 17.05.2010 – 15:38:27 and another learner viewed information about “CRC-Karte” at 17.05.2010 – 15:38:15.
Usage History:
The Usage History shows a graphical representation of the learners’ activities. The visualization is grouped by action types and displays each action type in a different color. The x-axis represents the time when an action took place while the y-axis sums up the number of actions that were performed at this time.

The CAM Zeitgeist Demonstrator is a Desktop application which is downloadable for Linux and Windows.
You can start the application with double-click on the downloaded .jar file. The CAM data visualized in the demonstrator was explicitly generated for Demonstration purposes and simulates user monitoring data for the time span from April 1st 2010 and November 30th 2010.
Thus, to see some visualization you need to select a start- and an end-date which are in between this of this time interval in the Date Chooser component.
1) download and start the tool
2) choose start/end date
3) press evaluate button
You can see the Top10 items per event by clicking on the "Details" link in the Usage Summary section.
You can focus on specific events by (un-)selecting the Events displayed in the Event Selector component and afterwards press the evaluate button.
